Michael Scott “Mike” McGuire, age 58, of Elizabethton, passed away at his home on June 18, 2021 following an extended illness. Mike was born in Elizabethton to the late Marian Clark McGuire and James Floyd McGuire. In addition to his parents, Mike was preceded in death by his adopted family, Margie and Carl Gouge and Rex Parris; maternal grandparents Bess and Monta Clark, and paternal grandparents Rena Dell and James Tessie McGuire. Mike was a graduate of Elizabethton High School, Class of 1981, and East Tennessee State University. He worked as a bond trader for Vining Sparks, First Tennessee, and other brokerage firms for more than 20 years. Mike loved to travel and especially enjoyed his last trip to California and Texas for his nieces’ high school and college graduations. Following his retirement, Mike took great pleasure in trading stocks and giving investment advice to his family. He attended First Christian Church of Elizabethton. Those left to treasure his memory include his beloved Matthew; sisters Jamie Butterworth (John) of Burbank, CA, Susan Turrentine Smith (Norwood) of Tampa, FL, and Millie Turrentine of St. Augustine, FL; brothers Robbie McGuire (Brenda) of Johnson City, and Kenny Thomas (Lisa) of Williamstown, Kentucky; Cathy Counts Parris of Johnson City, several nieces and nephews; and special friends David Reynolds of LaFollette, and Gary and Martha White of Elizabethton. Mike also leaves behind a large family of cousins in the Elizabethton area, as well as many friends whose lives he touched. The family will receive friends from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM on Friday, June 25, 2021 at Tetrick Funeral Home in Elizabethton. A graveside service to honor the life of Michael Scott McGuire will follow at 1:30 PM at Happy Valley Memorial Park with Mr. Michael Klaus, minister, officiating. Active pallbearers will be Gary White, David Reynolds, Kenny Thomas, Robbie McGuire, Sarah Butterworth, Rebecca Butterworth, Daniel Smith, and Bentley Smith. Those who prefer memorials in lieu of flowers, may make donations in Mike’s memory to Second Harvest Food Bank of Northeast Tennessee or the charity of their choice. The family would like to express a special thank you to David Reynolds, and Gary and Martha White, whose friendship and support was invaluable during Mike’s final years.
