John George Augusta

July 2, 1946 - June 18, 2022

John G. Augusta, "Johnny”, passed away peacefully Saturday, June 18, 2022, at his home surrounded by family. He was born to the late John and Tanya Augusta in Linz, Austria, July 2, 1946. Johnny was a 1964 graduate of Cumberland High School in Cumberland, Kentucky. He attended the University of Kentucky until he was drafted to the United States Military. He served as a flight deck troubleshooter and airman with Fighter Squadron Eleven for the United States Navy. He survived the USS Forrestal explosion July 29, 1967. He received an Honorable Discharge January 5, 1972. Johnny had a passion for music, which included the ability to play the trumpet, saxophone, bass and piano that led him to Memphis to work for STAX records. He was also honored to play the organ for Cumberland Pentecostal Church. He was known for his construction talent resulting in founding and operating Augusta Construction where he served communities in South Eastern Kentucky and North East Tennessee. Johnny is survived by his loving wife, Sara "Sissy" McKnight Augusta of nearly 49 years. He also leaves behind his three children and their spouses: Jay and Susan Augusta, Brandye and Dave Polisky, Mandy and Clayton Bailey. He was blessed with four beautiful grandchildren: Samuel, Lydia, Josie and Kimber. Also surviving: sister Lily Jenkins; brother Paul Augusta and wife Roberta; brothers in law David McKnight, Johnny McKnight and James "Junebug" McKnight and wife Barbara; sister in law Debbie and her husband who was Johnny's best friend, Shelby Fields; a host of special nieces, nephews and cousins. He is preceded in death by his parents, John and Tanya Augusta, brother in law Ray Jenkins and a host of dear family. Johnny was a believer and his family finds comfort in knowing he is with his Lord and Savior. The family of Mr. John “Johnny” Augusta will receive friends from 5 to 9 PM Tuesday, June 21, 2022, at Tetrick Funeral Services, with special words presented by Pastor Kai Carter at 7:30 PM. A Celebration of Life will be held at 12 PM Wednesday, June 22, 2022, in the Tetrick Funeral Services Chapel, with Pastors Michael and Barbara Blair officiating. The graveside committal service will follow at Mountain Home National Cemetery at 2 PM. Pallbearers will be selected from family and friends. This obituary is lovingly written by the Augusta family.
