Carl Ray Hinkle

November 19, 1935 - September 14, 2020

Carl Ray Hinkle, age 84, of Johnson City, Tennessee passed away at home surrounded by those who loved him on Monday, September 14, 2020. Carl was born in Carter County to the late Bruce and Bonnie Simpson Hinkle. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Ruth Lambert; and two brothers, Ed Hinkle and Bill Hinkle. Carl was retired from General Motors after 30 years in the Fisher Body Plant in Pontiac, Michigan and the Orion Plant in Lake Orion, Michigan. He received many awards through GM for his innovation. He was a proud United States Air Force Veteran. Carl was a caring, humble man that never asked for anything. He was very independent, loving, giving, patient and quiet. Above all he was a loving father, grandfather and great grandfather that will be missed greatly by his family. Carl loved working and he loved his grandchildren, watching golf and wrestling. He used to caddy for golfers and enjoyed walking and picking up the discarded golf balls. Those left to cherish Carl’s many wonderful memories include his children, Gary Hinkle and wife Tracy and Stephen Hinkle (Amy); his grandchildren, Tyler, Taylor, and Alyssa Hinkle; his great grandchildren, Tessa Hinkle and Sirus Hinkle; his sister, Carolyn; and the mother of his children, Geraldine Hinkle. Several nieces, nephews and cousins also survive. A graveside service to honor Carl’s life will be conducted at 2:00 PM on Monday, September 21, 2020 in the Mountain Home National Cemetery (New Annex) with Pastor Josh Carr, officiating. Active pallbearers will be selected from family and friends. Those wishing to attend the graveside service are asked to meet at the cemetery at 1:50 PM on Monday. The family would like to thank the special homecare nurses and his physical therapist for their sweet and kind care for Carl. Those who prefer memorials in lieu of flowers, may make donations to Niswonger Children’s Hospital, 400 N. State of Franklin Road, Johnson City, TN 37604. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Washington County is mandating that all citizens who live in or visit wear masks or facial coverings in public all visitors to the graveside service are required to adhere to this mandate.
