Benny Lee Gardner

Benny Lee Gardner, 71, passed away June 7, 2021 at Franklin Woods Community Hospital. Benny was born on July 5, 1949 to the late Albert Vance Gardner and Grace Carter Gardner. He was a 1967 graduate of Gate City High School, attended Virginia Tech, and served in the United States Naval Reserve. In addition to his parents, Benny was preceded in death by his two brothers, Walter R. Gardner and Wilmer A. Gardner. Survivors include his wife, Linda Anne McElveen Gardner, of the home; his two daughters and sons-in-law: Elizabeth Anne Gardner Hawk and Freddy Hawk, Jr., of Piney Flats, Sarah Leigh Gardner Thomas and Keith Thomas, of Knoxville; sister and brother-in-law: Jane Gardner Sapp and Kenneth Sapp of Carrollton, Georgia; four grandchildren: Alexander Peyton Hawk, Gabriel Grant Hawk, Carter Myles Hawk, and Vivianne Grace Thomas. He is also survived by several nephews, nieces, and many cousins, as well as his four-legged buddy, Barkley. We will miss Benny’s infectious personality, smile, wit, and constant love. He loved his family and we will forever love and miss him. The family would like to say a special thank you to all the nurses, doctors, and hospital staff of the ICU at Franklin Woods Community Hospital who helped take such good care of him. We will forever remember their kindness. A graveside service for Benny Lee Gardner will be conducted on Monday, June 14, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. in the Washington County Memory Garden’s mausoleum with Craig Gardner officiating. Pallbearers will be Freddy Hawk Jr., Keith Thomas, Cody McElveen, Alexander Hawk, Gabriel Hawk and Carter Hawk.
